Fred Astaire (1899-1987) was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to Austrian parents. He began his show business career at age 5, and had a successful dancing partnership in vaudeville and on Broadway with his sister, Adele.

Mr. Astaire went to Hollywood in 1932, where he first teamed with Ginger Rogers in Flying Down to Rio (1933) for RKO Pictures. In 1981 he received the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award.

His friend, the director Stanley Donen, once observed: "...the man embodied elegance."
