Cary Grant (1904-1986) was born Archibald Alex Leach in Bristol, England in 1904. When he was 13 years old, he ran away from home and joined the Pender Troupe, which specialized in eccentric dancing, stilt-walking, clowning and pantomime. His father found him and brought him home, but he left again about a year and a half later and rejoined the troupe. This time his father permitted him to stay.
In 1920, young Mr. Leach traveled with the Pender Troupe to the United States. Soon after he arrived, he began a vaudeville and theater career in New York City. Paramount was making movies in New York as well as in California, and they signed Archibald Leach to a contract, changing his name to Cary Grant. April 8, 1932, was the premier of This Is the Night, his first feature film.
On April 7, 1970, Cary Grant was given a special Academy Award for his achievements spanning his 40-year career as an actor. The Oscar was presented by Frank Sinatra, who said, "No one has brought more pleasure to more people ... than Cary has, and nobody has done so many things so well."
