Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) was born in New York City. He attended Columbia University and went on to study at the Institute of Musical Art (Juilliard). In the 1920's and 1930's, the composer collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart. Among their more memorable productions are On Your Toes (1936), which includes Rodgers' ballet Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, and Pal Joey (1940).
In the 1940's, Mr. Rodgers began his collaboration with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein III. Their works include South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), and The Sound of Music (1959). Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein shared the 1946 Academy Award for Best Song for It Might as Well Be Spring from State Fair. Mr. Rodgers won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for South Pacific.
