John Ford John Ford (1895-1975) was born in Maine, and was the son of Irish immigrants. He went to Hollywood in 1913, but his first breakthrough as a director came at RKO Pictures with the film The Informer (1935), which won four Oscars and the first New York Film Critics Award for Best Director.

In 1973, Mr. Ford won the American Film Institute's first Life Achievement Award. He also won a record of four Oscars for Best Director, for The Quiet Man (1952), How Green Was My Valley (1941), The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and The Informer (1935).
