Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998) studied at the Doshusha School of Western Painting, hoping to make a living as a painter. Unable to earn much money, he answered a newspaper ad for assistant directors at P.C.L. Studios. According to his mentor, Kajiro Yamamoto, "From the very beginning, Kurosawa was completely engrossed in separating what is real from what is false."
In the preface to Donald Richie's book, The Films of
Akira Kurosawa, Toshiro Mifune says: "He is an artist,
and he is demanding; a man more full, more whole ... than
most men are. It is from this understanding, this tact with
life, that he draws his films...."
