Jean Renoir Jean Renoir (1894-1979), the son of French Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, was born in Paris. His first film, a silent feature, La Fille de l'eau(1924) starred his first wife, Catherine Hessling, who had been a model for his father.

Mr. Renoir's films reflect a sense of fluidity and spontaneity, which are the result of his choreographed staging and masterful camera work. Grand Illusion(1937) won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Foreign Film. In 1975 Jean Renoir was recognized with a special Academy Award for his genius as a filmmaker.
